A superb wine from the village of Montagny, mineral, saline and gourmet, vinified by one of the greatest winegrowers in Burgundy, although still little known: a nugget to discover urgently.

Laurent Cognard, based in the charming medieval town of Buxy, in Saône-et-Loire, since 1997, is one of the best winegrowers in the region. It extends over the terroirs of Cô te Chalonnaise and Mâcon, producing, in both colors, generous, gourmet and deep wines, which never lack liveliness. Certified HVE, its wines are the reflection of a demanding viticulture as well as a vinification of great talent carried out by a reputed person who is just as generous as his wines. The heart of its white range is made up of its terroirs distributed in Mâcon and those distributed over the appellation of Montagny, which produces perhaps the most racy whites of all the Cô .you Chalonnaise. Indeed, often compared to Meursaults or even sometimes to Chablis wines for their fine and chiselled minerality, Montagny wines are high quality wines and Laurent Cognard produces among the best wines of this appellation.
This wine is the only one in the estate’s range to extend to the village of Montagny, near the stone extraction quarry, at the junction of three climats. Aged in 500 liter barrels, it produces a frank, mineral and intense wine.

A pure, light-golden shimmer draws your gaze deep into the glass. A delicate swoosh and you’re in for a real treat; there’s an intoxicating minerality to the nose, reminiscent of fine Chablis, not something I have experienced in the wines from this region. A hint of sweet, toasted almond and hazelnut are enveloped by a scent of warming, herbaceous French oak.

The initial flavours are of delicate yellow peach and citrus, then you move on to a warming core of barrel infused loveliness, toasted hazelnut and dried orchard fruit, then it’s on to phase 3; the emergence of a slatey minerality which relentlessly hangs on the palate and a very, very delicate, smooth creaminess to the finish.

In summary, this is essentially a beautiful Burgundian symphony, offering Chablis minerality, in tandem with warmth and elegance of Chassagne Montrachet and delicate, yet ripe, fruit character of the Côtes-Chalonaise, stunning.

Serve at a temperature of 12°C. It will pair perfectly with the following dishes: Rougail sausages , curry chicken , charcuterie board .
